Overview

The Tokai region is located in central Honshu, facing the Pacific Ocean, and typically includes Aichi, Gifu, Mie, and Shizuoka prefectures. This area serves as a vital corridor connecting the Kanto and Kansai regions, boasting developed industries, abundant natural resources, and deep historical and cultural roots. Aichi Prefecture's capital, Nagoya, is Japan's fourth-largest city and the economic hub of central Japan, renowned for its powerful manufacturing sector (especially the automotive industry, being home to Toyota Motor Corporation). Nagoya Castle, Atsuta Shrine, and unique local cuisine (like Miso Katsu, Hitsumabushi) are its main features. Shizuoka Prefecture is world-famous for its stunning views of Mount Fuji (Japan's highest peak) and high-quality tea production. The Izu Peninsula, with its beautiful coastline and rich hot spring resources, is a popular resort destination. Mie Prefecture attracts numerous pilgrims to Ise Grand Shrine, one of the most sacred sites in Japan's Shinto religion. Additionally, Mie is home to Toba, known for pearl cultivation, and Suzuka, famous for its F1 circuit. Gifu Prefecture, located inland, features parts of the magnificent Northern Alps and the UNESCO World Heritage site of Shirakawa-go, with its unique Gassho-zukuri (thatched-roof) farmhouses creating picturesque scenes, especially when covered in winter snow. Hida Takayama preserves the atmosphere of an old castle town from the Edo period. The Tokai region integrates modern industry, spectacular natural scenery (mountains, coasts, lakes), and significant historical and religious heritage, making it a dynamic and diverse area.
