Shikoku is the smallest and least populated of Japan's four main islands, located southwest of Honshu, separated from it by the Seto Inland Sea and facing the Pacific Ocean to the south. It consists of four prefectures: Tokushima, Kagawa, Ehime, and Kochi, hence its name "Shikoku" (meaning "four provinces," as it was historically divided). Shikoku attracts visitors with its spectacular natural scenery, long history and culture (especially related to Buddhism), unique traditional arts, and relatively tranquil pace of life. The famous Shikoku Pilgrimage (Shikoku Henro) is one of Japan's most renowned pilgrimage routes, where devotees travel, often on foot, to visit 88 temples associated with the Buddhist monk Kukai (Kobo Daishi). The route itself connects many scenic spots and cultural points across the island. In terms of natural landscapes, Tokushima Prefecture's Naruto whirlpools (formed by tidal currents) and the rugged Iya Valley (with its ancient vine bridges) are highly distinctive. Ehime Prefecture boasts Dogo Onsen, one of Japan's oldest hot springs (its main bathhouse inspired the bathhouse in "Spirited Away"), and the beautiful Shimanami Kaido, a series of bridges connecting Shikoku to Honshu, famous as a cycling route. Kagawa Prefecture is renowned for its delicious Sanuki udon noodles and Ritsurin Garden, one of Japan's three most beautiful landscape gardens. Kochi Prefecture is known for its bold "Tosa" spirit, dramatic Pacific coastline (like Katsurahama Beach), the Shimanto River (often called Japan's last clear stream), and the historical figure Sakamoto Ryoma. Shikoku is connected to Honshu via three main bridge systems (Akashi Kaikyo/Onaruto Bridges, Seto Ohashi Bridge, Shimanami Kaido). It offers an in-depth experience away from the hustle of big cities, allowing visitors to get close to nature and feel traditional Japanese and religious culture.
