The Kinki region, more commonly known as the Kansai region, is located in the west-central part of Honshu and serves as the historical, cultural, and religious heartland of Japan. It includes Osaka and Kyoto Prefectures, as well as Hyogo, Nara, Wakayama, Shiga, and Mie Prefectures (Mie is sometimes classified under Tokai, but has strong cultural and historical ties to Kinki). Having long been the political center of Japan, the region possesses an unparalleled wealth of historical sites and cultural heritage. Kyoto, the former imperial capital (794-1868), is world-renowned for its thousands of ancient temples (like Kiyomizu-dera, Kinkaku-ji), shrines (like Fushimi Inari Taisha), exquisite gardens, geisha district (Gion), and traditional culture, making it the premier destination to experience classical Japanese charm. Nara, an even earlier capital (710-784), features Todai-ji Temple (housing a giant bronze Buddha), Kasuga Taisha Shrine, and Nara Park with its famously friendly wild deer. Osaka, the economic hub and largest city of Kansai, is known for its vibrant street culture, food scene (hailed as the "Nation's Kitchen," famous for takoyaki and okonomiyaki), modern cityscape (like Dotonbori, Osaka Castle), and friendly, humorous locals. Kobe in Hyogo Prefecture is an international port city famous for its beautiful night views, Kobe beef, and historic foreign residences (Ijinkan). Wakayama Prefecture hosts the sacred Kumano Kodo pilgrimage routes (World Heritage site) and Mount Koya (headquarters of Shingon Buddhism). Shiga Prefecture surrounds Lake Biwa, Japan's largest lake. The Kansai region has its distinct dialect (Kansai-ben), and its culture and lifestyle offer an interesting contrast to the Kanto region (especially Tokyo), making it a core area for exploring Japan's deep history, experiencing diverse culture, and tasting authentic cuisine.
