The Tohoku region, located in the northern part of Japan's main island Honshu, consists of six prefectures: Aomori, Iwate, Miyagi, Akita, Yamagata, and Fukushima. It is renowned for its unspoiled natural beauty, rich historical sites, traditional festivals, and hot springs (onsen). Tohoku features magnificent mountain ranges, such as the Ou Mountains running north-south, and beautiful coastlines, including the Sanriku Coast known for its dramatic rock formations and clear waters. Winters are cold and snowy, creating unique natural wonders like the Zao "snow monsters" (ice-covered trees) and numerous ski resorts. Summers are relatively cool. The region has a long history dating back to ancient times, with significant historical sites like Hiraizumi (once a prosperous center of Buddhist culture, now a World Heritage site) and Aizu-Wakamatsu (famous for Tsuruga Castle and samurai history). Tohoku is particularly famous for its spectacular and vibrant summer festivals, collectively known as the "Three Great Festivals of Tohoku" (or more), including Aomori's Nebuta Matsuri (featuring giant illuminated floats), Akita's Kanto Matsuri (where performers balance long bamboo poles hung with lanterns on their foreheads, shoulders, etc.), and Sendai's Tanabata Matsuri (known for its gorgeous streamers). Hot spring resources are also abundant, with numerous atmospheric onsen areas like Nyuto Onsenkyo and Ginzan Onsen. Agriculture is a vital industry, producing high-quality rice (like Akita Komachi), fruits (Aomori apples, Yamagata cherries), and various local culinary specialties such as Sendai's gyutan (beef tongue), Morioka's reimen (cold noodles), and Akita's kiritanpo nabe (rice stick hot pot). Despite being heavily impacted by the Great East Japan Earthquake and Tsunami in 2011, the Tohoku region has shown remarkable resilience and continues to recover its unique charm through ongoing reconstruction efforts.
